
Stop Shivering in the Changing Room
Nobody likes that feeling of stepping out of a shower or a pool into a cold, damp changing area. It’s miserable. Usually, you’d just crank up a heater, but warming up the air in a humid room takes forever. It’s just not practical. That’s why we use shortwave infrared (IR) lamps. Here is the secret: these lamps don’t bother trying to heat the air. Instead, they send energy straight to whatever they’re pointing at. Your skin, your clothes—it just hits you. Instant warmth. The second you flip the switch, the tungsten filament inside the lamp hits its peak temperature in a fraction of a second. There’s no “warm-up” period. You don’t have to stand around waiting for the room to feel cozy. You just feel the heat immediately, which is exactly what you want when you’re shivering in a towel. To make this work, we use high-purity quartz glass. It’s tough. It can handle the shock of going from cold to scorching hot over and over again without cracking. We also fill the lamps with halogen gas. This lets us push the filament even hotter, which means the heat penetrates deeper and feels more intense. For the hardware, we stick with R7s or similar spring-loaded connectors. Why? Because lamps eventually burn out. These make it a five-second job to pop the old one out and drop a new one in. But, you can’t just slap these anywhere. These lamps pack a massive amount of heat into a tiny space. If you cram too many of them into a tight ceiling without giving them room to breathe, you’re going to warp your fixtures or trip your breakers. You’ve got to get the wiring and the venting right. And there’s one more thing: the “line-of-sight” problem. Since IR heat travels in a straight line, it doesn’t bend around corners. If a user is hiding behind a curtain or a wall, they aren’t getting any heat. It’s like a flashlight. You have to actually map out where people stand and place the lamps so they’re hitting the target.
