
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (and Your Breakers Happy)
Let’s be honest: putting a heater in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble. You’ve got steam everywhere and water splashing around. If your electrical insulation isn’t spot on, you’re looking at a ground fault—or worse—the second you turn the thing on. When we build our recessed ceiling heaters, our main goal is simple: keep the electricity where it belongs and far away from the metal frame.
Dealing with the Damp
Steam is sneaky. It finds its way into almost everything. To stop it from causing a short, we use high-temp ceramic insulators at the lamp terminals. Think of these as a sturdy wall that stops current from jumping from the quartz tube to the metal frame. We push the insulation resistance way up—over 100MΩ at 500V DC. Why? Because if you use cheap insulators, the humidity basically creates a bridge for the electricity. That’s when your GFCI or RCD breaker trips, and suddenly you’re shivering in a cold shower.
The Battle Against Heat and Steam
Recessed fixtures can act like a heat trap. To fight this, we use silicone gaskets and IP-rated seals all around the edge. It keeps the steam from drifting into the wiring junction box. And please, don’t skimp on the wires. We use wiring rated for at least 105°C. Cheap PVC just can’t take it; it’ll melt and crack under that intense infrared heat, leaving you with bare copper wires. Not a great look.
Getting the Grounding Right
We insist on a dedicated earth bond for the outer shell. If a lamp pops or a wire frays, the chassis needs to shunt that current to the ground immediately. But here’s the tricky part: you can’t just seal the unit airtight. If you do, the heat builds up inside and kills your lamp’s lifespan. It’s a balancing act. We use a vented chassis that lets the unit breathe and pushes air away from the electrical parts, while still keeping the moisture out. One last thing—double-check your ground continuity before you flip the switch. A single loose screw makes all this fancy insulation pretty much useless.
